The Shadow Knows

Written by Helen Power

Helen Power is obsessed with ghosts. She spends her free time watching paranormal investigation TV shows, going on ghost walks, and telling anyone who’ll listen about her paranormal experiences. She is also an academic librarian living in Saskatoon, Canada and has several short story publications, including ones in Suspense Magazine and Dark Helix Press’s Canada 150 anthology, Futuristic Canada. The Ghosts of Thorwald Place is her first novel.

My genre-blending supernatural thriller has found a home! The Shadow Knows will be published by CamCat Books in Fall of 2021.

This novel started as a kernel of an idea that came to me in a dream after binge-watching a bunch of Hitchcock films, including one of my favourites, “Rear Window”. Anyone who knows me knows that I’ve always been obsessed with ghosts, so of course I found a way to combine my two loves into a book-length project. I wrote this during my first ever NaNoWriMo in 2015, and I’ve been rewriting and editing it in the years since.

Here’s the brief synopsis from my query letter:

What would you do if your safe haven became your own unique brand of hell? Rachel Drake, an agoraphobic shut-in with a tragic past, is brutally murdered in the elevator of her apartment building. But her story doesn’t end here.

Rachel’s spirit is now attached to her “death spot”—the elevator—and she’s only able to visit the adjacent apartments. She is compelled to observe her former neighbours, but she only sees part of their stories. Whenever the elevator is summoned, Rachel is wrenched back to her death spot by her spiritual tether.

The lives of the residents intertwine in unexpected ways. Every one of them has a dark secret. An aging trophy wife whose husband strays. A surgeon guarding a twisted secret. A TV medium who may or may not be a fraud. Any one of them could be her killer…

I’m beyond excited, and I can’t wait to share Rachel’s twisted little story with the world! 🖤
